National Register of Historic Places Information

The National Register of Historic Places is the Federal Government’s list of historic sites worthy of preservation. There are multiple sites listed in all fifty states. At Moore Historical Consulting I work with the Tennessee Historical Commission to help determine if sites are indeed eligible for nominating to the National Register.

Eligible Sites Include but not limited to: - Homes
                                                                     - Commercial Buildings
                                                                     -  Farmsteads
                                                                     -  Main Streets
                                                                     -  Schools
                                                                     -  Churches

There are four criteria potential sites can be nominated under:
                                                                                                 - Criteria A: Overall History
                                                                                                 - Criteria B: Famous Person
                                                                                                 - Criteria C: Architecture
                                                                                                 - Criteria D: Archaeology
*Sites can be eligible for one or all four.

Benefits of listing your property:

The benefits of listing your historic property in the National Register of Historic Places allows the owner to apply for Federal grants or tax credits to help keep the property in a well maintained state. Listing also allows the public to become aware (more aware) of a site’s importance by making each nomination form public record. A simple Google search can uncover all the National Register listed sites in a specific county. Owners of commercial buildings commonly market their businesses by making it known, through brochures, social media, etc, that it is on the National Register of Historic Places. This often makes tourists more apt to stop and patronize their business. Listing your property in the National Register does not limit property owners ability to improve, or sell their property, require that owners open their properties to the public, or protect a property from human destruction.

The process:

Moore Historical Consulting’s Carver Moore will first survey and document the historic and current features of your property. This information along with photographs of the property will be sent to the Tennessee Historical Commission in order for them to make a determination of eligibility. If the site is determined eligible by the State Historic Preservation Office, a longer nomination form will be filled out. There is NO cost to you if the property is ruled ineligible by the THC. That form will then be submitted before the State National Register Review Board, and Moore will defend it. The members of that board will review the nominations and make their recommendations to the National Park Service. In rare instances is a site denied by the State Review Board. Once a site is listed, it is listed forever. In rare cases the destruction of, or in proper improvements to a property, that removes its historic feature(s), in which made it eligible, can cause it to be removed. The owner(s) can still improve their property. The nomination and listing process to the National Register of Historic Places can take up to one calendar year to complete, usually the timeline is dependent upon the property’s size.
